I was going to write an article berating the near-obsession with women’s underwear in Russell T. Davies’ version of “Doctor Who”. Having caught a recent rerun of the Series Three episode “The Lazarus Experiment”, I noticed the Doctor seemed particularly interested in a pair of Martha’s knickers! Much to her embarrassment, he actually picks them off the clothes line where they are drying and waves them at her; although her response is more one of mock indignation. This viewer was left with the distinct feeling that Martha is actually pleased the Doctor is finally showing an interest. Then I remembered the incident with Rose’s Mum Jackie, in “Love & Monsters”, in which she flashes her undies at poor old Marc Warren in the Laundromat and I began to get a little hot under the collar!! No, not for the reasons you’re thinking, dear reader! This scene was actually picked out of “Love & Monsters” and used as part of the Next Time trailer at the end of the preceding episode, “The Satan Pit”, in which we’d only just been treated to a glimpse of Rose’s thong, protruding from the back of her jeans, as she hugs the Doctor on her return to the TARDIS at the end of the story. I began to think that Russell is showing an awfully keen interest in the undergarments of his leading ladies, especially for someone who’s gay!!!
I decided to examine this pressing issue, of panties in our favourite science fiction series, just a little further! I thought back to the classic series and naturally remembered an incident involving the lovely Katy Manning! Who could forget her frilly red knickers as she climbs up a ladder out of a tunnel, in “The Day of the Daleks”, hotly pursued by Jon Pertwee gazing upwards as he makes his ascent!! I thought back even further and remembered Maureen O’Brien giving us a quick flash as she is menaced by Koquillion in the two-part adventure “The Rescue”. Unfortunately, I can’t tell you the colour of her panties as this serial was made in black and white! Fast forward two decades and Sarah Sutton gives us more than just a brief glimpse as she strips down to her undies for her swansong tale “Terminus”. A memorable farewell to all her adoring fans. And, no doubt she acquired many more following such a finale! Given the present penchant for female pop singers in science fiction, what with Billie and Kylie in “Doctor Who”, and “Primeval” actress Hannah Spearritt persistently battling dinosaurs in a vast array of not-so-baggy bloomers, what next? Given the soundtrack of the Christopher Eccleston episode “The End of the World”, it seems possible that Russell might want to cast Britney Spears as a future companion. There’s just one problem… As everyone knows, from all the lucrative paparazzi up-skirt shots of Britney’s vagina, Miss Spears doesn’t do pants!

If your theory is true this can only have very dire consequences for Series 4 and Catherine Tate... I may have to have a sick bag on standby. But, isn't Billie Piper due to make a one-off return...? Hmm. Maybe there'll be consolations?
The Troughton Cyberman 'Invasion' story is renowned for those interested in this 'niche'....
I was just thinking the same as Steve i.e. does this mean we're now going to see Donna N showing off her undies?? Perish the thought! "Ere, Mr Ood wot you lookin' at my knickers for like that? You some kind of perv, or something, Mr Alien? Why do you call me miss, do I look single to you? Nah, I'm not gonna take them off!" Etc, etc.
Maybe in the forthcoming Dr-lite episode with the three lady companions, we'll see some more underwear action? A sudden gust of wind blows through the TARDIS control room, leaving a near naked Donna,Martha and Rose...I actually think some of the straight male fans of the show would enjoy that...
So how come you said "I was going to write an article on berating the near-obsession with women's underwear in Russell T Davies' version of Doctor Who...", Tim? You just have! And a great/funny topic for a post. I think you're actually very right. As for exactly WHY RTD has this knickers fixation, all I can think is, perhaps he's a closet trannie? Some gay men like dressing up in women's clothing you know...
As far as I'm concerned Series Four is already a write off, Steve, though I'm not bitter or anything! Billie is indeed on her way back, no doubt for a Doctor-less bitchfest with the gurls!!
"The Invasion" is one of my all-time favourite "Doctor Who" stories, Doppelgänger, not for that particular reason but because it's a bloody good and well-directed adventure!
The grated flooring of the TARDIS would suit a Marilyn Monroe-style gust of wind to raise the level of our expectations, Simon, which could possibly leave us with a triple cliff-hanger!
I uncovered, so to speak, examples of panty-gazing in the classic series, too, so I couldn't entirely blame it on Russell although he does actually draw our attention to said attire!! I think RTD is possibly a closet heterosexual and I'm sure some straight men don the occasional frock too!!!
And would you like a triple cliffhanger like that, eh Tim? (I almost wrote "tripe" cliffhanger - Freudian slip?!)
I forgot to mention as well, Tim - you didn't mention Peri Brown and her sensational "Planet of Fire" striptease!! Okay, okay, if you're going to be fussy I suppose you could argue she was wearing a BIKINI as opposed to KNICKERS. And what about Turlough stripping to his smalls in the very same story? Proof that Dr Who isn't too one-sided in the pants stakes...oh! And remember Mickey in his boxers in "Rise of the Cybermen"? More please!
I was also wondering if you'd read my Sapphire and Steel post and what your thoughts on the show were? Sorry as I know I didn't comment on your last sci-fi post so a bit hypocritical of me...
Triple cliff-hanger? Not with the present companions! Now if we were talking Polly, Victoria and Zoë!!
I didn't forget Peri, by the way! She's the first companion I named... Take a closer look at the word "Experiment", near the beginning of the piece, and you'll notice I slipped her undercover!!
I read both your "Sapphire and Steel" posts with interest but didn't comment because I've never seen an episode, I'm sorry to say. I was at Uni when it first aired, in 1979, and only became aware of it retrospectively. Hopefully it will be repeated one day and I'll be able to see it then, with a bit of luck! Looking forward to Peter J. Hammond's second "Torchwood" episode in the meantime!!
You mean you don't find Rose or Martha attractive Tim? (Donna is a different kettle of fish...fish wife perhaps). Even as a gay man I find them pretty sexy ladies!
Aha! Peri undercover, ready to burst out and expose herself?
That's okay about S&S, of course if you haven't ever seen it, it would be hard to pass judgement. You can always try You Tube as all of the episodes are currently posted up there! I think you would enjoy it - like a lot of old school drama, a lot of attention is paid to characterisation and decent storylines, rather than the more "flash bang" way of making programmes these days. Yes, I too am looking forward to seeing PJ Hammond's contribution this season of "Torchwood" - "Fairies" was definitely one of the best in a variable Season One
Rose and Martha aren't unattractive, they're just not top of my list! Have you seen Billie's wedding pics? In some she looks like Melinda Messenger which is slightly bizarre when considering they're both from Swindon!
I'm sure I'll like "Sapphire and Steel", too. I made a mental note to myself, when I read your post, that it's on YouTube. I did actually watch the first four episodes of "Survivors" on there, four or five months ago (despite owning eleven of the first thirteen on VHS), as well as the first three episodes of "Frontios" and some of "Warriors' Gate". Lack of time prevented me watching anymore so I still haven't seen Romana and K-9's departure from "Doctor Who"!
