Inspired by Steve’s recent post “Hamble is Evil”, I was reminded of a “lovely” photo of ex-“Blue Peter” and “Crufts” presenter Peter Purves, taken for the 1973 “Radio Times Doctor Who Tenth Anniversary Special”, in which he’s surrounded by a selection of rather inert-looking toy soldiers, rebellious robots and killer dolls.
Referencing one of the “Doctor Who” stories in which he’d appeared, in his acting days during the Sixties (“The Celestial Toymaker”), I’m thinking Peter wouldn’t have looked out of place as one of the “Monty Python” team! In this picture, he’s the “Spitting Image” of a certain Eric Idle!! “Know what I mean, know what I mean?” I’ll “say no more”!!!

Great photo of Peter Pervert, I mean Purves! Might have to nick it for my own blog! As well as the Billie Radio Times cover...
Loving Peter P's flared blue trouser suit. Niiiiice!
I actually think the dolls would make good Autons i.e. they look very realistic. The doll we saw in "Terror of the Autons" looked like a plasticine Morph and was totally cr*p and silly.
Very very scary - and the dolls.
I recall watching some film in my early twenties about a load of toys that came to life and extracted their revenge on nasty humans. There was a horrid Punch doll that was absolutely terrifying!
And also do you remember those nasty killer dolls in Barbarella with the snapping mouths and metal teeth?
It is a good pic, Simon, and you're welcome to use it. It's the way Peter's standing, hands on hips! I wonder if he went to a gentlemen's outfitter?!! Ooo, "suits you sir"!!!
There are a lot of things in classic "Who" that look silly now which at the time, and perhaps because we were the "right" age when we first saw them, probably seemed like the best thing ever...
I got a surprise when asking my 11-year-old nephew which is his favourite Season Three new "Who" story only to be answered "Last of the Time Lords"! I wonder if he'll think the same when he's older?!! He added that he likes Russell's stories but doesn't think he's a very nice person!!!
I have vague memories of that film too, Steve, but can't think, for the life of me, what it was called or who was in it!
"Barbarella" -ella, -ella, -ella... I do remember more vividly! Who can forget Jane Fondle in or out of all those costumes, before she went all political on us, struggling to fend off the advances of Duran Duran or being fed to the hungry orgasmatron?!! Especially when I had a copy on video for years!!!
creepy photo... a true find...
There was a comic strip too... 'House of Dollman'?
Thanks Tim...Yes Peter's pose is somewhat camp, true.
Who knows what we'll be laughing at in twenty years time when we look back at 2000s Dr Who? That is funny what your nephew said about "Last" being his favourite episode - but then it was very kid-oriented I think.
Jane Fonda was a babe in that movie. It has so many good bits in it (and I'm not just referring to Ms Fonda's body) such as the parts you mentioned. One of my fave lines was her: "You mean the cosmos is still living in a state of erotic irresponsibility?" or words to that effect. Time you did a post on it Tim!
Doppelgänger... The comics I read as a youngster were TV Comic, because it featured "Doctor Who", TV21, not just because it featured "The Daleks" on the back page, and, in the early 70s, "Countdown", which featured both "Doctor Who" and the Gerry Anderson shows but didn't feature Carol Vorderman!
Simon... I didn't have the heart to tell him "Last of the Time Lords" is my least favourite!! He liked Donna being all chavy too, in "The Runaway Bride", so what do I know?!!
Good question concerning what in new "Who" will, unintentionally, be amusing to us in the future. Mickey already looks as odd in "Rose", as an Auton, as does the doll you mentioned in "Terror"! And then there's Chris's guide to good parenting, "Go to your room"!!
Barbarella's right! The cosmos is still living in a state of erotic irresponsibility!! Look at Mickey inviting Rose to share a hotel room with him, in "Boom Town", having just told her he's seeing somebody else!!!
