A Room with a View - November 4th, ITV1

Timothy Spall and his son Rafe are to appear together for the first time as father and son in a new ITV adaptation of E. M. Forster’s novel “A Room with a View”.

This classic drama, set against the backdrop of rural Italy and England in the early twentieth century, tells the story of the impressionable young English woman, Lucy Honeychurch, and her attempts to find love and happiness.

In 1912, chaperoned by her cousin Charlotte, Lucy arrives at an Italian guesthouse looking for adventure. There she meets Mr. Emerson and his unusual son George, who offer up their room with a view to the newcomers…

Lucy soon finds herself drawn to George, but all too quickly the holiday ends and Lucy returns to her normal life in England. Time passes and she gets engaged to a new man, Cecil Vyse – but will she be able to go through with the marriage when George suddenly reappears in her life?

Timothy Spall (“Auf Wiedersehen, Pet” & “Shooting the Past”) and son Rafe (“The Chatterley Affair” & “Dracula”) play Mr. Emerson and his son George in this adaptation by Andrew Davies (“Pride and Prejudice” & “Bleak House”), while Elaine Cassidy (“Felicia’s Journey” & “Fingersmith”) and Laurence Fox (“Gosford Park” & “Lewis”) play the parts of Lucy Honeychurch and Cecil Vyse.

I can imagine Timothy Spall would be good in that role. I remember Denholm Elliot playing the character in the 1985 film version? Talking of which I used to love that movie - well the bit when the men all strip naked and run round the pool anyway...ahem...I was rather more interested in Rupert Graves than Helena Bonham-Yah-Yah-Carter!!

Yup, Denholm Elliott is always good value. I remember him exclaiming, "Up here is where the sky is blue" gesturing towards his mind, suggesting he was happy to give up his lodgings as he had no need of "A Room with a View"!

It was, indeed, also the movie in which we were privileged to ponder on Simon Callow's rather rotund posterior!!

Mmm. Mr Callow's posterior was a less attractive position.

Actually a friend of an ex landlord once told me that Mr Callow picked him up in a bookshop...nice.

I'm thinking you might have meant Callow's posterior was a less attractive proposition, Simon! But, considering the various positions he may have put said bottom in, whilst propositioning folk out shopping, did bring a certain smile to my face! Made me laugh out loud, to tell the truth!!

God yes, I DID mean proposition! So why did I write position...Freudian slip! But kind of appropriate anyway, as you say...ha ha!!

TimeWarden said...

Very appropriate! :)

Now that would be a room with a view... ;-)

A view I'd rather NOT view, thanks all the same, Stevenage!

I think I'll stick with viewing Helena Bonham-Yah-Yah-Carter, if it's all the same to you, gents! And, Elaine Cassidy, in the up-coming production, is even more viewsome!!
