Producers of “Doctor Who” have had second thoughts regarding the casting of the new companion. Impressed by her performance as Sally Sparrow, in the season three episode “Blink”, they have come to the conclusion that Carey Mulligan would be ideal to play the Doctor’s assistant throughout the whole of season four! Like Freema Agyeman before her, Carey will not be reprising the role she has already played in the series but appearing as a new character called Rachel. In one of her first adventures, the Doctor takes Rachel to an alien planet, unusual in itself, where she meets a mysterious race of strangely-subservient beings. But, the Doctor has met them before! Once… when they were last seen falling into a black hole and the Time Lord found himself unable to save them!! In “Planet of the Ood”, we discover the origins of the creatures and find out what they have to say for themselves. Why do they behave the way they do - and will the Doctor become their friend or foe? Rachel is certainly in for a shock…

If only!
sigh.....
you had me goin' there....
NEVER in a MILLION YEARS would Russell or the production team admit they had made a mistake.
Everything that goes right or wrong was planned right from Day One - you KNOW that Tim...
(and according to Russell's interview in The Word a couple of months ago, if you don't like it then you're a straight man who doesn't cry, because everyone else loves it)
My goodness, I thought for one moment that was true!! As the others say, if only!
I think we should petition RTD NOW to re-cast the companion. Move over Donna La Chav, Hello Sally the Sparrow! (Or should that be Sally Piaf?)
I thought it was kind of funny that the outfit Carey is wearing in your pic looks like the kind of thing Bonnie Lamgford's Mel used to wear! Can you imagine Sally screaming her head off and talking about carrot juice? Perish the bloody thought!
Part of this post is actually true! Just a shame it's not all of it!! Must admit, though, I'm tempted by the return of the Ood!!!
Who's Russell kidding, Paul, in his interview? Sounds to me like he has a chip on his shoulder about something, which comes over in some of the lines in his show - usually the lines that leave a bad taste in the mouth!
The pic of Carey, Simon, is from her new film "And When Did You Last See Your Father?" which is out in October. It stars Jim Broadbent and Colin Firth as well as another of my favourites Elaine Cassidy, whom I've posted about before.
Carey's wearing a name tag which, coupled with the dress, suggests she's at a wedding or some other family occasion. The Mel story you're thinking of is "Paradise Towers"!
You had me going too. I am hoping that the Ood will make for an interesting episode.
Paradise Towers - eeeeesssh!! Now Tim, you can't tell me that was a good story?! Richard Briers as the caretaker?? Tilda and Tabby, those silly old bats who torture Mel? They should have pranged her to death with that bloody toasting fork!!
Okay - I'll stop there!
I watched "Blink" again last night and it's true, Carey Mulligan is a pretty good actress!
I agree, Karen. Another Ood story has possibilities. My fear with the proposed idea, though, is that revealing their origins may remove them of their mystery!
I don't pretend "Paradise Towers" is a classic, Simon, but it does actually contain some very good ideas even if they are all borrowed from J G Ballard! It's also reminiscent of Terry Gilliam's "Brazil". I think it still has a certain relevancy, in the wake of 9/11, warning us not to "build high for happiness"!
"All hail the Great Architect"!!
Yep "Paradise T" did have dramatic potential and was an interesting concept...unfortunately it was the execution that let it down!
"Brazil" scared the hell out of me last time I watched it. Sometimes I think I'm living in it - it's called London!
It's a while since I watched "Brazil" but I remember thinking it quite likely we will end up having to pay to breathe fresh air! Especially with Ken Livingstone as Mayor!!
DAMN YOU!
i read it and thought "ooh, fantastic, Carey Mulligan in Dr Who. what more can a man ask for?"
oh well, i'll keep dreaming...
Hi Daniel. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment.
Guess we'll have to "make do" with her excellent appearance in the episode "Blink"!
it's funny - all this is so reminiscent (which i can't spell) of Tara King's Avengers... The episode wit LIady Diana had all the fans baying for a companion swap - but it was not to be...
